Meta has agreed to a $17.1 billion settlement over claims related to social media addiction. The settlement resolves claims filed by 47 states, including Michigan, as well as Washington, D.C., and several territories.

The claims alleged that Meta designed Instagram with addictive features and knowingly exposed children to mental harms. As part of the settlement, Meta will implement stronger child-safety measures on Instagram and Facebook.

Michigan is expected to receive at least $171 million from the settlement. The agreement also requires Meta to add safety features, including daily time limits and mandatory pauses for children on its platforms.
