It originated from a community chicken barbecue hosted by the Plymouth Rotary Club to raise money for playground equipment. This initial event was attended by about 500 people and raised $505.

The event grew over time, with the first official festival held in 1960 at Kellogg Park, drawing nearly 3,500 people. What began as a neighborhood picnic has evolved into a multiday celebration involving families and community members.
